Thomas William Metcalf was born in Minnesota and left at an early age eventually landing in Carmel,California on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.

His interest in art started at a very early age and as a youngster he was constantly drawing wildlife and outdoor scenes depicting the Minnesota forests and farmlands where he grew up.  He was fascinated with the colors of the oil paints his mother used for decorative folk art projects and through osmosis gravitated naturally to that medium.

The quaint village of Carmel with its scores of galleries became an influential center of creativity for him, eventually leading to a professional career in fine art. He is a founding member of the Carmel Art Festival, established in 1993, for which he was awarded the Carmel Citizens Award from then mayor Ken White. The festival has blossomed into an international event attracting artists from all over the world.

He has traveled with his wife Marie to 35 different countries capturing his journey and adventures on canvas and in the novels and stories he has written.  He and Marie migrated from Carmel, California to the beautiful island of Maui in 1999 where they reside to this day.

Fueled by the memories of their many adventures the two wanderlusts seek hidden exotic cultures and return often to Paris and the French countryside for the summer months, where endless pastoral scenes are waiting to be painted and stories of adventure remain to be written.

He has shown his art in galleries throughout California, Hawaii, and Europe.  He has served on the board of directors for several art institutions including The Lahaina Arts Society and the Hui No’eau located on Maui.   He is an avid golfer and former coach for the Lahainaluna High School Girls Golf team on Maui. He plays guitar, rides his motorcycle Mojo with Marie and enjoys writing novels and short stories.  His many travels to Paris and Europe inspired his novel The Painter
